Paul tells us in Romans 8:19–22, “For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now.”

Creation has been subject to futility. Fruitfulness, purpose, and abundant life are blocked by the curse, blocked by human sin, blocked by the younger siblings that God called to serve, protect, and cultivate the elder creatures. Locked in a cycle of fruitless struggle, creation groans as it longs for the children of God to be revealed. They are the ones who trust God, who choose God’s way. And when that day comes, creation will be redeemed.

This is the state of creation at the end of Genesis 3, but it is not the end of the story. God says if we humble ourselves and repent, God will heal the land.
